What Is Affiliate Program Cookie Duration and How Does It Work?

TL;DR — Cookie duration sets the time window after a click in which an affiliate earns commission credit for any resulting conversion.

Affiliate program cookie duration is the length of time a tracking cookie remains active in a referred visitor's browser after they click an affiliate link, determining whether a sale or lead is credited to that affiliate. When a user clicks a tracked link, the affiliate network or in-house platform (such as Impact, ShareASale, or PartnerStack) stores a cookie with an expiry timestamp. If the visitor converts before that window closes, the affiliate earns the commission; if they return after it expires, the sale goes unattributed.
 Key Facts

The industry standard cookie duration is 30 days, though programs range from 1 day (Amazon Associates) to lifetime cookies on some SaaS platforms.
A 1-day cookie is common in high-volume retail programs where impulse purchases dominate and merchants want to limit commission liability.
SaaS and B2B affiliate programs frequently offer 60 to 90 day windows because enterprise buying cycles are longer than consumer retail cycles.
Last-click attribution is the default model on most networks, meaning the most recent affiliate cookie before conversion receives 100% of the commission.
Cookie stuffing, the practice of dropping affiliate cookies without a genuine click, violates every major network's terms of service and results in account termination.
Browser privacy changes, including Safari's ITP (Intelligent Tracking Prevention) and Firefox's ETP, can shorten effective cookie lifespans to as little as 24 hours regardless of the program's stated duration.
Some platforms replace cookie tracking with server-side or fingerprint-based attribution, which is not subject to browser cookie restrictions and can honour longer attribution windows more reliably.
Affiliate managers can negotiate custom cookie durations directly with networks like CJ Affiliate or Awin for high-performing publisher partners.

Why Duration Length Affects Publisher Recruitment
A short cookie window is a real friction point when recruiting affiliates. Content publishers, review sites, and comparison platforms often drive traffic that converts days or weeks after the initial click. Offering a 7-day cookie to a blogger whose audience researches purchases over a fortnight means a significant share of influenced sales will never be credited. Affiliates track this metric closely before joining a program, and a 30-day or longer window is frequently a baseline expectation in the SaaS and finance verticals.
How Browser Privacy Policies Complicate the Picture
The stated cookie duration in a program's terms is not always the effective duration. Safari's Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP 2.0, released in 2018) caps client-side cookie lifespans at 24 hours for domains classified as trackers. Firefox's Enhanced Tracking Protection applies similar restrictions. For programs that rely purely on first-party JavaScript cookies, a stated 30-day window can functionally collapse to one day for a large share of traffic. Affiliate managers running programs on older in-house tech should audit what percentage of their tracked clicks come from Safari and Firefox users before advertising a duration they cannot reliably honour.
Choosing the Right Duration for Your Program
There is a genuine trade-off between commission liability and affiliate satisfaction. A longer window increases the chance of crediting sales that would have happened anyway (known as the coupon-last-click problem, where a voucher site drops a cookie seconds before checkout). Shorter windows reduce that liability but can alienate content affiliates. A practical middle ground for most programs is 30 days with last-click attribution, combined with a clear policy on coupon and loyalty site commission rates to manage margin exposure.
